Teachers and parents,
Today is an unforgettable important day. 2,468 graduates of Class 2018 who have completed their studies are about to embark on a new journey. First of all, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all graduates! I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the faculty and staff for your great efforts and to pay tribute to all parents for your hard work and dedication!
Dear students, you are witnesses and participants in the development of your alma mater, and also beneficiaries and disseminators of our achievement. Many honors were given to us in the past four years including being selected into Basic Capacity Construction Project in Middle and West China’s Universities as the only non-public university, obtaining enrollment qualification for the Chinese Government Scholarship and Silk Road Scholarship, passing the evaluation of the Ministry of Education and getting approved as a master's degree conferring unit and becoming the first local non-public college upgraded to a university… Our modern and internationalized International Exchange Building and the new library have been widely reputed by guests from various sectors. Minister Chen Baosheng of China’s Ministry of Education praised our Global Village as the No. 1 village in the world! Evaluation Expert Group highly praised Huawai as a flagship university with “its particular features, commitment, responsibility and contributions to education based on its horizon”, which best exemplifies Huawai spirit and culture. From its establishment, Huawai has been aiming at establishing a “century-old non-public university” and cultivating high-quality application-oriented talents with national consciousness and international vision. In the past 23 years of its history based on its educational concept of “All is done for students to be integrated, talented and successful” and offering the most responsible students-oriented education, Huawai has been dedicated to cultivating high-level application-oriented and comprehensive talents on the path of becoming a non-profit non-public university with distinctive characteristics and a high-level, internationalized non-public foreign language university.
Dear students, during the brief four years in the university, you have harvested progress and growth with proud achievements and honors: 40% of the 2018 graduates participated in large-scale voluntary service activities; 204 graduates achieved outstanding results in academic competitions and scientific research, including the first prize in the FLTRP Cup National English Speech Contest; top prize of China Model United Nations Competition – Olive Branch Special Peace Award; the first place of "China’s English Interpreting Contest” (Jilin Province) for 6 consecutive years; the winner for the 2018 Jilin and Heilongjiang Contest District is sitting among you. From 2016 to 2018, Huaqiao students have won the gold medals of basketball and volleyball matches for three consecutive years at provincial and municipal university students' sports meetings. I’m pround of all your achievements and would like to say “thank you” on behalf of the entire school for you efforts, contribution and understanding!
My happiest moment came when I read your farewell remarks and I would like to share several of them. “Four years at Huawai has reshaped me to a great extent. All Huawai bears my memories of youth. I’m grateful for the students-centered education here and I’ll bear in mind our school motto ‘bridging Chinese culture to those of the West and cultivating talents through ideal cultivation’.” “I’m bidding farewell to Huawai with the thought of ‘tomorrow will be a better day if I follow my own path’. I sincerely wish my alma mater a more primising future as a bridge for every schoolmate to go see the world.” I can feel your self-confidence and maturity from these remarks, and I am particularly pleased to see the Huaqiao spirit in you!
Dear students, university education is a great ideal rather than a dream or fantasy; a university is expected to produce educated citizens with high morality to meet needs of the society, and to make contribution for scientific and technological advancement and the creation of new cultures. Since its establishment, a real university takes education responsibility as its eternal paramount social responsibility, and guides students to complete and go beyond their own personality through establishing correct values towards life and world outlook. Likewise, the commitment of Huawai has forged the strong foundation for your growth and gives you unlimited power for your development.
Dear graduates, you are full of hope and longing for your future in the prime of life, which coincides with the progress of China’s Two Centenary Goals. You’ll be participating in the historical process and have the honor of realizing the long-awaited dreams of several generations of Chinese. This is your mission endowed by the era. General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized, how the “first button” in life is done and how the first step in youth is taken determine whether a person can lead a meaningful life. To that end, I would like to offer a few proposals:
First, I hope you to set high goals and stay determined. “Where there is a will, there is way.” High goals lay foundations for your life; your goals and your career choice will lead your life paths. "Prosperous young generations make a prosperous country", and “Grand ambition makes grand contribution.” I hope you to be firm in your ideals and faith, truly practice patriotism and connect your personal future with the destiny of the motherland and the people. I hope you to adhere to the right path and pursue truth while taking into consideration the need of the country, the nation, and the people, so as to build a life worthy of the times.
Secondly, I hope you to practice self-cultivation and self-development. "High morality is the foundation of great achievements." Morality is regarded the highest purpose of mankind and of education. It means integrity, justice and love. The standard to measure true characters is one’s behavior while being alone. Students receive the same education will walk out on different life paths after graduation because they follow different values. “A man without true morality cannot own true wisdom, which differs from sophistication. Men with sophistification care mostly about their own interest, while those with true wisdom care about others’.” The information age has brought an unprecedented field of vision to you, but it also contains unprecedented challenges. I believe the outstanding Huawai graduates will be able to follow the correct values as the "master key" to life and strive to be talents with high moral character, virtue and talent. I hope you to keep in mind the saying “As Heaven’s movement is ever vigorous, so must a gentleman ceaselessly strive along.”
Third, I hope you to be eager to learn and be creative. “The realization of dreams starts with learning, and great career is achieved by competence.” I hope you to cherish every moment since the moment you have will never return. In today's world, changes brought by the fourth industrial revolution such as artificial intelligence, quantum communications, and life science etc. are sweeping through our lives and will continue to influence our future. We need to keep learning to move forward. Everyone has limitless potential but the only way to explore it is keep learning and practice. “Proficiency roots in diligence.” I hope you will seek truth and develop outstanding skills through learning from your future colleagues, from practice, from everything, every moment and everywhere, to make diligence, learning and creativity the power of youth!
Fourth, I hope you to be simple in being and stable in doing. “One needs to act to complete even minor tasks.” A down-to-earth attitude is the key to seeking truth and a great career. Sufficient evidence has shown that the choice of hardship and sacrifice equals to choice of success. Therefore, I advise you to choose the grassroots or other harsh environment to train yourselves and your talent. “A great cause begins with minute details.” I hope you will bring the “strict, refined, and detailed” work style to your career regardless of your profession. Persistence distinguishes those with great achievements and those who give up halfway. Before your goals are achieved, keep your strong will, perseverance, greatest efforts and highest ideals. Being simple and stable will lead you to a promising life!
“Broad sea bears springing fins, and vast sky breeds soarring feathers.” Society is a greater university. I wish you greater achievements heading forward! I believe that you are fully prepared to embrace a new era and strive to serve the country, fulfill responsibility for life, and honor your alma mater.
Dear students, I hope you will remember that Huawai will always be your warm harbor and your strong support. I wish all of you a prosperous future! You are always welcome to come back home!
